Racing Poster Drafts

Drafts

pirates at sebring poster drafts

This was a draft for a poster or t-shirt. In the '90s I produced posters, bumper stickers and t-shirts to sell along with the book. The small print on the top of the poster reads: "For two pins, I'd tell them Cobras of mine to use full throttle."

porsche targa florio poster draft

This is another design, probably for a poster, that was never used. It is based on two photos in the book. The photo of the car is by Geoff Goddard who was another class photographer. It was a real privilege for me to get to know the people connected with the events of the book. They were all gracious and shared with me, what was for most of them, their most intense life experience. It was a lesson in self-realization. I met most of them before the vintage racing craze had begun, when these events were more or less forgotten. To everyone who helped me, all the drivers, mechanics, team members and photographers, my sincere thanks.

sebring 1965 poster draft

This was a design for a t-shirt. The artwork is by Larry Honegger who did the four-view drawings in the book. Larry's art was based on a Joe Farkas (Ford Photographic) photo in the book. For the t-shirt there was to have been text at the bottom: "Jo Schlesser wins ..." etc. I produced other neat t-shirts but have lost or given away the original art.

larry honegger painting

This is a photo of a 4' x 6' painting by Larry Honegger, also based on the same Joe Farkas photo. The painting was among the artifacts I gave to the Shelby museum in Boulder, CO, on the condition that they be available for view by the general public. If you visit that museum (303-516-9565 or shelbyamericancollection.org), tell them you want to see all the Michael Shoen photos, models, posters, books, correspondance, art, armbands, artifacts, etc..

ac cobra poster

This was a poster I sold in the 1990s, by "BOW" who did the covers for a beautiful Japanese magazine "Car Graphic". I gave the original art to the Boulder, CO Shelby Collection Museum. The painting was done from a photo of CSX 2345 after the Rossfeld Hillclimb. See the book, page 325.

ferrari 275 GTB poster draft
This was a draft for a t-shirt featuring the successor to the GTO, the 275 GTB Special, and one of its pilots, Willy Mairesse. Had Ferrari been able to field three or four GTB Specials, the Cobras may not have won the '65 championship. See the book, pages 278 and 331.
